NewsWeek Leipzig optimistic for the future

MOSCOW Domodedovo airport handled 17,375 tonnes of cargo in August, 4.4 percent more than in the same month of 2011. Over the first eight months of this year the gateway pro- cessed 12,991 tonnes, 3.6 percent up year-on-year.

TRANSPORT and logistics services provider MNX has named its Singapore office as a regional hub and headquar- ters. It is expected to drive an expansion of MNX services in the Asia Pacific area, particularly relating to the lifesciences, aviation, media and entertainment industries.

“THE constant growth expe- rienced during the past seven years continued in 2012 too,” says Markus Kopp, CEO of Mitteldeutsche Airport Hold- ing,

the operator of

Leipzig/Halle International airport. “Leipzig/Halle Airport

handled more than 566,100 tonnes of freight during the first eight months of the year, an increase of 15 percent over the same period in 2011. This means that the airport has sig- nificantly detached itself from the general developments in Europe and elsewhere in Ger- many and it is aiming for freight volumes exceeding the

800,000-tonne mark for the first time in 2018,” he added. Leipzig/Halle, the Euro-

pean hub for DHL and home base for AeroLogic, set a new record for freight volumes handled for the seventh year in succession in 2011. “As a result of this,” Kopp continued, “our airport has been able to con- tinually expand its role as Germany’s largest express freight centre and the coun- try’s second-largest cargo hub, particularly as the airport has successfully focused on niche products – for example, exporting large animals and the charter business.” In terms of current offer-

ings: “The airport has been operating an Animal Export

Center since 2010 and also has a veterinary border control office,” he explained. “Two Antonov AN-124 aircraft are permanently based at Leipzig/ Halle too. And Volga-Dnepr, which operates a maintenance base for the AN-124s at the airport, stationed an IL 76-

90VD here for commercial operations in June. “There is also an extensive

road feeder network to more than 100 destinations, and this means that all the regions in Europe with significant freight volumes can be reached within 48 hours.”

Wiehoff: “part of our long-term growth strategy”

John Wiehoff, CH Robin-

son chairman and CEO, commented: “Phoenix is a high-quality growth company

that brings additional expertise and scale to a key part of our long-term growth strategy.” He went on: “Along with

their proven track record of success, Phoenix has strong customer and carrier relation- ships, a talented management team and excellent people, and a performance-based company culture that is very similar to Robinson’s.” Bill McInerney, Phoenix

executive chairman, observed: “Joining with CH Robinson enables Phoenix to offer its customers a broader menu of services, leverage combined volumes more efficiently, and provide employees with even greater

career path opportunities.” Lufthansa Cargo looks for fresh ideas with online portal

will evaluate all the ideas and comment upon them, and, in coming weeks, solutions will be posted on a dedicated online portal. The ideas platform will be

online until 7 November. After that date, the best ideas will undergo detailed evalua- tion and will then be fleshed out jointly with their initia- tors. Attractive prizes, such as

flight training in the MD-11 flight simulator, await the

most successful participants. “The first round of the Chal- lenge last year was a great success,” said Lufthansa Cargo executive board member, Dr Andreas Otto. “The key thing for us is to

look beyond the confines of our own company to find new, innovative approaches to solutions that will also under- pin our forward-looking strategy, Lufthansa Cargo

2020.” nGermany feature, pages 8-10
