ART AND ARCHITECTURE

You ask me, Sir, for a suitable institution to which you propose to leave your paintings. May I suggest an asylum for the blind?

- James McNeill Whistler

70939 HIDDEN TREASURES REVEALED by Albert Kostenevich

Rare 1995 first edition subtitled ‘Impressionist Masterpieces and Other Important French Paintings Preserved by the State Heritage Museum, St. Petersburg’. The paintings in this book were long thought to have been destroyed during the Second World War and now it has been revealed that they spent at least half a century hidden in the store rooms of the Hermitage, their existence a carefully guarded state secret. With 99 gorgeous reproductions in full colour and more than 270 illustrations in total, included are some beautiful gatefolds like Degas’ Place de la Concorde (Viscount Lepic and his daughters) with a dog and a horse and carriage and an onlooking gentleman. The text explains in full how several rapid black brush strokes on grey signify the mourning banners for Alsace, lost to Germany after the Franco Prussian war. The painting displays much movement in several directions at once and the frock coat is impeccably tailored to fit the Viscount who strolls along unhurriedly, typically clutching his umbrella under his arm and not taking his cigar out of his mouth. This extraordinary volume presents in colour 74 important Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in superb detail - by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and many others - taken to Russia from Germany after the end of the Second World War and stored since then at the State Heritage Museum. Only two of the works, almost all of which had previously been part of several private German collections, have been reproduced in colour before. An exhibition in spring 1995 marked the first public showing and this book was published to coincide with this event. Here are paintings of bathers, a self portrait of Cézanne and several pieces by Van Gogh, among them his remarkable ‘White House at Night’ painted six weeks before his death. From the 20th century there is a landscape by Derain and figure paintings by Picasso, Rouault and Matisse. With some 150 comparative works and documentary photographs amplifying the discussion, provenance, bibliographies and exhibition lists for each painting. A superb heavyweight treasury, 292pp, 9" x 11½”.

VALLAYER-COSTER edited by Eik Kahng and Marianne Roland Michel Painter to the Court of Marie- Antoinette, Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818) was one of the most talented still-life painters of the French school. Her works, long prized by private collectors, are today located in some of the finest museums throughout the world.

Our lavishly illustrated catalogue presents an array in full colour, and the text is by distinguished scholars of 18th century French art. Recently rediscovered paintings, including three royal portraits from the collection of Versailles and a hitherto unknown pastel of Marie- Antoinette, are published here for the first time. The authors look closely at her relationship with the landscape painter Joseph Vernet, her grappling with the precedent established by her immediate predecessor the still-life painter Jean-Siméon Chardin, the 18th century collectors of her art, and her place in the larger context of 18th century women painters and patrons. Her tulips are stunningly beautiful, not only in their botanical detail but exquisite colouring and texture. A Basket of Flowers with Butterflies held at the Louvre, Still Life with Jar of Apricots and Hurdy-Gurdy and the Orange Tree 1765, both by Henri-Horace Rowland Delaporte are also shown alongside Still Life with Game and Flowers in a White and Blue Porcelain Vase by Chardin, in full page colour plates. There are portraits of Coster in engravings, charming portraits in oval frames, one to each large page like the beautiful Bust of a Young Vestal 1779 and Satyrs and Putti Playing with a Panther, 1776, The White Soup Tureen and Attributes of Music, all glowing in colour plus smaller self portraits, roses and other flower portraits and a portrait of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Approximately 160 illus, many in colour. 2002 Yale

70556 RUBENS: A Portrait by Paul Oppenheimer It is perhaps not generally known that, as well as being a talented Flemish painter, and a proponent of the extravagant Baroque style that emphasised movement, colour and sensuality, Sir Peter Paul Rubens was knighted by both Philip IV King of Spain, and Charles I King of England. For he was not only a classically educated humanist

scholar and art collector, he was also a diplomat who travelled extensively, and whose journeys combined art and diplomacy and probably spying as well. While travelling, he was able to study paintings by Veronese, Tintoretto, Titian, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as being influenced by the recent highly naturalistic paintings of Caravaggio. His knowledge was broad-based, and the author of the present volume is keen to show that, despite his reputation for painting monumental canvases crammed with battling lions, sensual gardens of love and well-fleshed women, which have nothing to say to the modern viewer, Rubens’ grasp of absolute beauty is totally contemporary and, moreover, that his groundbreaking vision actually foreshadowed present- day art and science. In presenting a vivid re-creation of Rubens’ age - its wars, art and theatre, politics and eccentricities - this revelatory biography, uses paintings, drawings and correspondence. He was responsible for Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. 404 pages with illustrations in colour and b/w. £23.99 NOW £7.50
