Research shows that companies which invest in learning and development (L&D) are those that thrive. And this applies even in lean fi nancial times. Early fi ndings from the Towards Maturity Benchmark
Study indicate that economic uncertainty is infl uencing fi rms’ spend on learning solutions, with six out of 10 businesses allocating more of their L&D budget to technology. Mobile and social learning is also on the increase, with many fi rms using popular technologies to help them deliver more at a lower cost. Of course, while it can only be a good thing
for employees right across a business to be in tune with the latest technology, a mixed approach to L&D will allow a company to cover all bases. Smart organisations know that what works best is a combination of approaches to suit individual learners’ needs.
The recent growth in apprenticeship schemes demonstrates a growing commitment among L&D professionals to fi nding new approaches to talent management . But integrating younger staff into the business may not be the only challenge they face in the coming decade. The abolition of the default retirement
age last year means more people are already working for longer – and this brings with it big implications for L&D professionals, who will need to take into account how diff erent generations learn and share knowledge. To get the best return on their investment
in L&D, organisations need to understand their people and the learning approaches that suit their needs. The result is more engaged employees , which , ultimately, supports the business .
These and other related topics will be discussed at the World of Learning Conference and Exhibition on 2-3 October at the NEC Birmingham.
