VSW is currently one of the world’s larg- est manufacturers of forged wheels made of internally-produced steel. Total automation, process improvements, and equipment repair management have helped the VSW to increase its annual output to 850 000 wheels. In recent years, OMK has invested about $100 million in the modernization of its wheel- rolling facilities. Under the OMK Integrated Investment Program for the Period Ending 2015, the Company plans to make large invest- ments in the development of VSW wheel-roll- ing business and new wheels. VSW produces more than 140 standard siz- es of wheels designed for freight and passenger cars, locomotives, and metro trains. Vyksa Steel Works has Europe’s largest fa- cilities, including steelmaking facilities with vacuum degassing and a line for the produc- tion of solid wheels and wheel centres, ranging from 760 mm to 1 098 mm in diameter. The integrated steelmaking facilities enable OMK to provide the highest quality control at all levels of the production cycle, increasing the speed of response to a customer’s enquiries, and opening up additional opportunities for the development of new kinds of steel for manu- facturing wheels.
The Engineering & Technology Centre at
Vyksa Steel Works seeks to streamline exist- ing railway wheel types, as well as develop and implement innovative designs. Engineers at the ETC use advanced software and hard- ware to analyze wheel designs and assess the impact of various operating factors, in order to develop unique products that meet inter- national standards and customized require- ments.
OMK specialists develop and test advanced wheel solutions jointly with leading domestic and international research centres, including wheels for heavy freight, high speed passenger and metro trains.
As examples of recent products, this year
VSW: • started to produce B38 wheels for the AAR market;
• developed and implemented new steel grades for passenger coach wheels and new designs of wheels for metro trains;
• began to start developing the production of wheels for high speed trains in conjunc- tion with Russian Railways and Siemens.
Vyksa Steel Works (VSW), part of Russia’s United Metallurgical Company (OMK Group), began manufacturing railway wheels in 1973. Since then, VSW has produced over 19 million wheels for domestic and international markets, with OMK wheels now supplied to more than 30 countries.
As a wheel supplier, OMK has a strong presence in many countries, including the USA, Canada, Europe (Slovakia, Czech Re- public, Bulgaria, Serbia, Slovenia), India, Jordan, and South Korea. OMK wheels are now being supplied to more than 30 coun- tries.
VSW’s main wheel designs have been cer-
tifi ed for use on railways in North America, India, and Eastern and Central Europe. VSW makes extensive certifi cation efforts, annually obtaining 2 or 3 new certifi cates from national railways. VSW has put into operation an NDT ac- ceptance line for automatic quality testing, making it possible to enhance wheel quality. This has been certifi ed to ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, and OHSAS 18001:2007. This year OMK and VSW have received the IRIS Certifi cate.

The high quality of OMK wheels has been found acceptable by the American, European, and Russian railroads. VSW never stops working on new types of wheels for different regions, including design and technology development for its new products. This year VSW developed new wheel designs for American, Indian, and European railways. Thanks to its strenuous efforts in non-CIS markets OMK was awarded contracts for the supply of wheels to India and Eastern European countries. At present, the VSW Wheel Rolling Facili- ties are fully equipped for the mass production of new-generation wheels with enhanced prop- erties for freight and passenger car applica- tions, including wheels with improved wear resistance, and wheels for modern vehicles with axleloads of 25 to 30 tonnes. Railway wheels from Vyksa Steel Works are successfully operating in all climatic regions.
