T
he most powerful shared- memory supercomputer in Europe has been officially launched by Professor
Stephen Hawking. Expected to advance our understanding of the origin and structure of our universe, the COSMOS supercomputer is part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council DiRAC high-performance computing facility, a national service for UK cosmologists, astronomers and particle physicists, as well as non- academic users.
During the launch, which is
part of the Numerical Cosmology 2012 workshop at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Professor Hawking said: ‘We have made spectacular advances in cosmology and particle physics recently. Cosmology is now a precision science, so we need machines like COSMOS to reach out and touch the real universe, to investigate whether our mathematical models are correct.’ Dr Jeremy Yates, the project director for DiRAC, added: ‘The
New products Connect-IB
Connect-IB is a scalable server and storage adapter solution for HPC, Web 2.0, Cloud, Big Data, virtualised data centres and storage environments. The Connect-IB product line consists of single and dual port adapters for PCI Express 3.0 with options for x8 and x16 host bus interfaces, as well as a single port adapter for PCI Express 2.0 x16. Each port supports FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand with MPI ping latency less than 1µs. All Mellanox Host Channel Adapters (HCAs) support
CPU offload of transport operations and Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) for efficient computing. Connect-IB adapters deliver the highest throughput of 100Gb/s utilising PCI Express 3.0 x16, scaling with innovative transport services, sub- microsecond latency and 130 million messages per second. Dynamic Transport operation support offers unlimited scalability and end-to-end data protection for data reliability.

COSMOS supercomputer is an essential and vital part of the DiRAC Facility. DiRAC now offers five leading systems to UK researchers, two of which are in Cambridge. ‘It allows the UK cosmology and extra-solar planet research communities to take a leading role in understanding how structure was
formed in the very early Universe and the composition of the atmospheres of extra-solar planets. These activities will deepen our understanding of the origins of the cosmos and life, and make a vital contribution to the knowledge economy.’ Manufactured by SGI, COSMOS is the first system of its kind.

TotalView 8.10
Parallel debugger TotalView 8.10 has been released with expanded support for the Cray XT, Cray XE and Cray XK lines of supercomputers. Comprehensive debugging is provided with support for the Nvidia Cuda parallel programming environment on the GPU-accelerated Cray XK6 supercomputer, as well as early access support for Cray’s OpenACC compiler. In addition to providing reverse
debugging on both serial and parallel (MPI) programs running on the Cray XE line, TotalView 8.10 includes a new replay on demand capability, for both the Cray and other Linux x86- 64 environments.
Developers can now record and deterministically replay mid-way through a debugging session when the program enters the specific areas they want to troubleshoot.
