With Walks in Arizona and Oregon and bike rides that covered seven states, “muscle power” took on a whole new meaning this year for tinnitus fundraising. The 2012 Jack Vernon Walk to Silence Tinnitus capped off a spectacular season of fundraising events highlighting the strengths of our most dedicated supporters.
Muscle Power Raises Money to Fulfill ATA’s Mission
The AZ Walk to Silence Tinnitus, a satellite event of the main Walk, kicked things off in March. Started last year by a dedicated
group of volunteers in the Phoenix area, the second annual AZ Walk raised over $17,000 and took place at beautiful DC Ranch in Scottsdale. With a bit of sup- port from area businesses and national hearing health companies, this year’s AZ Walk was a beautiful and fun event that involved tinnitus health professionals, students and patients.
The AZ Walk was followed up by the start of the 2012 Tour de Tinnitus, in May. This event included

a month-long series of bike rides taking place across the coun- try. Started last year by Mark Church, who rode the Katy Trail across the state
of Missouri, the Tour was joined this year by several additional riders and teams representing Florida, New England, and the Northwest. Mark met quite a few folks on his ride last year and several of them started teams of their own, joining him and his wife Vicki, for another ride this year on the Katy Trail.
New to the Tour this year was Sal Gentile, who rode 100 miles along the Withlacoochee Trail near Tampa, Florida on a hot and very humid day that challenged him to his core. On the north end of the east coast was Marlon Dale, who rode over 325 miles through three states in the northeast (Connecticut, Massachusetts, and upstate New York). Marlon faced cooler weather and a few more hills than Sal, but finished the ride with a smile on his face and sense of accomplishment for his part in the Tour.
The final leg of the Tour de Tinnitus was ridden by Ed and Lynnae Ruttledge of Vancouver, Washington. Ed and Lynnae rode nearly 300 miles on their tan- dem bike through Washington and Oregon, timing their ride to end at Willamette Park in Portland – where the 2012 Jack Vernon Walk to Silence Tinnitus was taking place! They were able to ride through a group of participants at the end of the Walk, and were cheered on at the finish line.

Though they battled some rainy days during their ride, Ed and Lynnae arrived in the middle of a spec- tacular day in Portland, which all of the walkers had enjoyed thoroughly. For the second year in a row, the Jack Vernon Walk to Silence Tinnitus was held at Willamette Park, and for the second year in a row we defied the odds of Portland weather and had a gor- geous day. As one walker noted, if anyone in Portland is planning a late-spring wedding, they should check to see what day ATA is holding their Walk, as it is sure to guarantee some sun!
