BYOD Is Here to Stay How to Facilitate the Desktop of Tomorrow Today M

OST business workers consider smartphones and tablets essential productivity tools. And they want

the fl exibility to bring their own mobile phone, tablet, or notebook to work and use it to access the network. In fact, many of your users likely have devices that are newer and faster than your corporate owned assets. If your organization would like to leverage these outside assets, provided you can maintain the same management and control, you should consider a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model. Organizations that rely on wireless

devices for critical business activities must provide enough bandwidth to keep applications and the workforce productive and on the move. A BYOD model can help employees be more

effi cient while saving your organization money. But IT can lose control by embracing BYOD, and BYOD raises legitimate concerns about security. You must address governance, policy, process, procedures, management, and legal issues when considering a BYOD model.

Pre-Planning Breeds Success Make a plan today for BYOD with

advanced network and mobility solutions. Prepare your network to handle the demands of secure mobility to deliver a rich, seamless experience for your users. Here are some important

considerations:  First, take a look at who has access to your wireless network. Is it only employees? Or do you also allow guests, vendors, or contract workers access?

 Second, assess how users access your network. Is it with notebooks, tablets, or smartphones? Different devices will

require different levels of security.  Finally, assess what applications are running on your network. Do you plan to extend your VoIP network to the WLAN? Are you using wireless video cameras for surveillance? Are your users downloading video? Don’t forget to consider your wired network—you may want to upgrade to faster switches. You may also want to consider these basic industry best practices when

developing a BYOD plan:  Balance security, compliance, legal liability, and cost concerns with a positive

user experience.  Engage stakeholders early and keep them involved throughout the project.
