LEIPZIG/HALLE International airport strength- ened its position as Germany’s second-busiest air freight hub in the first half of this year, handling 422,315 tonnes of cargo over the six months. That total represented a 15 percent year-on-year

AIRBERLIN IS TO inaugurate a new non-stop operation between Chicago O’Hare and Berlin on 23 March next year. The German carrier will fly the route three times a week upon launch, but the service is expected to upgrade to an A330- 200 flying a five times a week frequency in May 2013.

Düsseldorf offers ‘wide range of belly capacity’

Describing Düsseldorf as “the lower-deck specialist airport”, the gateway’s manager mar- keting and sales Thomas Schürmann said: “The airport has become a busy hub con- nected to a growing number of intercontinental destina- tions, making it increasingly important for the big for- warders and logistics companies. “The airport’s ready access

to a wide range of lower- deck capacity, together with an independent trucking network based in a high potential catchment area is stimulating Düsseldorf’s further cargo growth.” Among the latest improvements to the German gateway’s bellyhold connections is an

upgrade by Turkish Airlines, which switched to widebody aircraft on its four times a day flights to Istanbul’s Ataturk airport in April. Using A330, A340 and B777s on the route, Turk- ish offers 15 to 20 tons of capacity per flight in each direction. Furthermore: “The potential for developing maindeck freighter traffic provides a useful addition to the bellyhold capacity,” Schürmann pointed out.
