SHARK HUNT!

TURN THE TABLES ON AN APEX PREDATOR

BY JOSE CHAVEZ W

hen big sharks are the tar- get species, deploying the

baits is a bittersweet moment. As I watch a bloody chunk of cut bait drift away, I wonder how big the shark will be. I wonder if I will be able to handle it in my kayak. The sun drops and the sky turns red, a tranquil moment with an underly- ing tension.

The peace is broken by the slow clicking of a big reel. I grab the rod, engage the drag, and set the hook. The water explodes. My ex- citement is checked by the real- ization that there is a raging shark at the other end of the line. The dance with the man in the grey suit begins.

Sharks provide kayak anglers with an exhilarating experience that must not be taken lightly. These apex predators must be respected for both their teeth and their im- portant place in the ecosystem.
