We were sad to hear of the passing of Jamaican born jazz saxophonist Andy Hamilton, on 3rd June aged 94; of long-time fRoots writer Jan Fairley (who also wrote for us under the pen name Christine Charter), on 9th June aged 63; of original Adge Cutler & The Wurzels banjoist Reg Quantrill, on 11th June, aged 77; of ghazal interpreter Mehdi Hassan on 13th June, aged 84; and of the great Puerto Rican cuatro player Guillermo ‘Yomo’ Toro on 30th June, aged 78.

The Ballad Of The Games is a six part series of Radio Ballads currently being broadcast by BBC Radio 2 on Mondays at 10pm until 6th August. More than sixty new songs have been written for the series by songwriters Jez Lowe, Chris Wood, Julie Matthews, Boo Hewerdine, Steve Tilston and Martin Simpson, drawing inspiration from interviews with Olympic athletes taking part and people who were there. Singers include Bob Fox, June Tabor, Chris While & Julie Matthews, Barry Coope and Nancy Kerr and musical accompaniment comes from John McCusker, Andy Seward and Andy Cutting. The programmes are produced by Vince Hunt for Smooth Operations.
BBC Radio 2’s Mike Harding will present two hours of live music highlights and backstage interviews from the Cambridge Folk Festival at 7pm on Wednesday 1st August.
