UK AIRPLAY ANALYSIS BY ALAN JONES

AFTER SERVING FOR SIX WEEKS as runner-up to Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe on the radio airplay chart, We Are Young by Fun feat. Janelle Monae (right) waves the flag of surrender, and dips 2-5. Call Me Maybe scores an impressive eighth straight week atop the chart and is showing admirable tenacity, with gains of 156 plays and 7.35m listeners week-on-week. Nevertheless, its days look

numbered with the fast-gaining Princess Of China – a dream team alliance of radio favourites

Coldplay and Rihanna – surging 3- 2, with the biggest increase in both plays and audience of any song week-on-week. Audiences are what counts on the radio airplay chart, and on that measure Princess Of China has closed its deficit on Call Me Maybe from 18.19% to 1.41%. Princess Of China still has plenty

of room for growth – it was aired 2,720 times on 168 stations last week, compared to Call Me Maybe’s huge tally of 4,589 plays on 171 stations. Princess Of China’s advance is being aided

The TV airplay chart is currently based on plays on the following stations: 4Music, Bliss TV, Clubland TV, Channel AKA, Chart Show TV, DancenationTV, Flava, Kerrang! double digit support from both stations, which provided a joint 43.25% chunk of its overall audience. 529 plays on the Capital Network were also extremely valuable, generating a further 22.19% audience share. The promotional videoclip for

enormously by the fact it was aired 18 times on Radio 1 and 11 times on Radio 2 last week. Nine songs were aired more frequently on both stations but no other track got

Princess Of China is also gaining at a rapid rate – it jumps 35-6 on its first full week on air, increasing from 161 to 435 plays, with top tallies of 76 plays from Chart Show TV, 52 plays from The Box and 50 apiece from MTV Hits and MTV Music. Its rise doubtless contributed to a slowdown in support for Rihanna’s solo hit, Where Have You Been, which loses

its two-week lead at the top of the chart, falling 1-2 to be replaced by Cheryl’s Call My Name. The introductory single from her third solo album, Call My Name’s promotional videoclip racked up net gains of 126 plays – from 425 to 551 – last week to take over at the top. The track, which also makes a spectacular debut atop the OCC sales chart this week, is in recovery mode on the radio airplay chart, where it slipped 4-6 last week but now rebounds to four, with a big spurt in growth. Its plays rocket 30.82% from 2,310 to 3,022, while its audience escalates from 46.95m to 56.05m – an improvement of 19.38%.
