CONTRIBUTORS CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Michael Pardy

Pardy has been playing on the boundary between land and water for over 25 years. Based in Victoria, B.C., he is the director of SKILS paddling center, past president of the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of B.C. and one of the country’s most decorated, and dedicated, kayak instructors and leaders. A regular contributor, in this issue he teaches the high brace (page 30) and seven rules of surf etiquette (page 25). “My local surf spot has become very crowded over the last few years,” says Pardy, “I’ve witnessed a number of conflicts stemming from a lack of understanding and applying accepted etiquette.”

Peter Mather

A wilderness photographer based in Whitehorse, Yukon, Mather captures most of his un- forgettable wildlife, adventure and landscape images on extended paddling and hiking trips in Northern Canada. His photo in Stills (page 18) was shot during a two-week exploratory kayak trip along the B.C.–Yukon border. “I have a great passion for our natural landscapes,” says Mather, who is currently working on a photography book of Nahanni National Park. “My goal is to inspire folks to get outside and explore our wonderful wildlands.”

Tom Watson

Watson writes about camping, paddling and hiking from his Minnesota home. Formerly a kayak tour operator based in Kodiak, Alaska, Watson’s fascination with Pacific Rim Native kayaking history led to an interest in Greenland and the continental spread of paddling traditions. He looks at traditional hunting tools in our special Greenland-style feature (“Be- yond the Blade,” page 38).

Virginia Marshall

While Adventure Kayak senior editor Marshall enjoys reading about other paddlers’ won- derful adventures, the best stories are the ones she gets to research firsthand. Last summer, she signed up for Ontario Greenland Camp, where activities included traditional rope gym- nastics with Greenland legend Maligiaq Padilla. “I learned to perform Qajaasaarneq—which means “like rolling a kayak”—on the ropes with Maligiaq spotting me,” says Marshall, “How crazy is that?” Her report appears on page 40.
