We were sad to hear of the passing of Oxfordshire folk musician Dave Parry, on 30th March; of Congolese likembe (thumb piano) player Antoine Moundanda on 2nd April, aged 84; of Dubliners founder Barney McKenna on 5th April aged 73; of French Hawaiian guitar ace Cyril Lefebvre, on 7th April aged 64; of Greek laïkó specialist, Dimitris Mitropanos on 17th April, aged 64; of Levon Helm, drummer with The Band, on 19th April aged 72; and of the man whose Play In A Day launched many a guitar career, Bert Weedon, on 20th April aged 91.


BBC Radio 3’s World On 3 (Fridays at 11pm) has Mary Ann Kennedy with guests Jim Moray (18th May), Roberto Fonseca (8th June) and Seth Lakeman (15th June), and Lopa Kothari with guest Vusi Mahlasela (25th May). Song Society has secured a grant of £585,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to archive, conserve and digitise materials from six archives containing some of the country's most important folk music collections, and allow free public access to 58,400 collection items through a new web portal. The Full English project will bring together the collections of Harry Albino, Lucy Broadwood, Clive Carey, Percy Grainger, Maud Karpeles, Frank Kidson, Thomas Fairman Ordish, Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Alfred Williams for the first time, to create the most comprehensive searchable database of British folk songs, tunes, dances and customs in the world. www.efdss.org
