CLASS NOTES 1960s
Michael W. Ryan (BS ’60) published Nonfeasance, a book detailing his more than two- decade effort to convince the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops that the Church’s primary source of income, the Sunday collection, is highly vulnerable to repetitive theft. Ryan contends that there is essentially only one way to adequately protect the collec- tions, thereby warranting the application of uniform guidelines conference-wide. Uniquely, the Archdiocese of Chicago accepted that rationale and implemented the recommended guidelines in 2005. Few if any arch/dioceses have followed Chicago’s example, thereby prompting Ryan to pres- ent his case in book form.
Hon. Robert G. Mahony (JD ’65), administrative law judge with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has retired from the federal government after 46 years of public service, including more than 14 years at the SEC.
Karen Moriarty (MUND ’68, MS ’71, EdD ’75) recently published Defending A King—His Life & Legacy, a book about Michael Jackson.

John Irvin (BA ’78), former captain of the Loyola tennis team, was nominated for Pro of the Year honors by the Georgia Professional Tennis Association, a distinction he won in 2004. His award-winning junior tennis academy, Hot Shotz at Legacy
Park, just celebrated its 20th sea- son. Hot Shotz is proud to have 124 scholar/athletes in its ranks.
Karl T. Blank (JD ’79) is general counsel of the U.S. Railroad Re- tirement Board, effective January 2012.
1980s
Denise Simeone (MPS ’80) is director of mission and program development at the National Catholic Reporter Publishing Company.
Jan E. Berger (MD ’82, MRES ’85, MJ ’89), currently an assistant professor at Northwestern Uni- versity School of Medicine and a former senior vice president and chief clinical officer for CVS Caremark, has joined the board of advisors for Truveris, Inc., a company that “makes software to drive efficiency, transparency, and cost containment in the pre- scriptions claims process.”
Leonard M. VerVers (BA ’82) is senior research scientist in the research analytical department at Nalco Chemical Company. Ad- ditionally, he spent three weeks in October 2011 in Malawi with Water for People. The purpose of the trip was to help bring potable water and sanitation to the people in the villages through- out the southern portion of the country.
Mark A. Frey (MSW ’83) is president and CEO of the Alexian Brothers Health System, where he has been an employee for more than 25 years. Previously, he served as president and CEO of the health system’s Behavioral

Alisa Arnoff (BA ’84, JD ’88) was named an Illinois Super Lawyer in the area of employment and la- bor law, as well as one of the top
50 women lawyers in Illinois.
Suzanne Shier (JD ’85) is a tax strategist for personal financial services at Northern Trust Corpo- ration. A 26-year veteran in estate planning, tax law, and fiduciary administration, Spier has earned numerous honors, including recognition as a Leading Estate Planning Attorney by Leading Lawyers Network. Super Lawyers magazine named her an “Illinois Super Lawyer” from 2009 to 2011.
