Norman Rockwell found success as an illustrator early in life (he was still a

teenager when he was hired as art editor for Boy’s Life magazine) but the turning point in his career came when he moved to Vermont in 1939 and began to paint scenes that reflected small-town American life. “I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed,” he explained about the sentimental, often humorous depictions of ordinary people going about their everyday lives that adorned the cover of The Saturday Evening Post for many years (321 covers in all). And although critics in his lifetime often dismissed his work as having little value as art, you can’t deny the subtle power of his images to stir emotions (or even to pack a punch when he wanted them to) as you experience the vast treasure trove of his work (and his evolution as an artist) at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Mass.

From the covered bridges of New Hampshire to your visit to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, experience an up-close look at life in autumnal New England.

The Minuteman is a symbol of the American Revolution, but in fact

Massachusetts had been using Minutemen (elite militiamen ready to respond at a minute’s notice) for over a hundred years, through their many conflicts with the French and Native Americans. Ironically, the Minuteman disappeared as an institution with the outbreak of the Revolution in 1775, but he’s still immortalized in that statue at Concord Bridge by Daniel Chester French, whose other famous statue (Abraham Lincoln) sits in the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC.
