CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS: Saint Nicholas and Krampus
Regensburg’s Weihnachtsmarkt on the Neupfarrplatz
Regensburg Sausages and song are big in Regensburg, as your visit to its Weihnachtsmarkt clustered around the New Parish Church will attest. Market goers feast on the city’s famed sausages, along with steamed dampfnudel dumplings, gingerbread, roast chestnuts and, naturally, glühwein from Bavarian claret, as they admire the work of glassblowers, chandlers and potters, and listen to the joyous strains of the acclaimed Regensburger Domspatzen choir – some of whose alumni will perform on your riverboat tonight! The Thurn und Taxis family’s Palace of St. Emmeram is the setting for your exclusive tour and visit to its private Christmas Market.
Dressed in red and sporting a flowing white beard, the European image of St. Nicholas – or Father Christmas or Père Noël – has much in common with his “cousin” Santa Claus. But it’s not just “jolly old Saint Nick” who visits homes on Christmas Eve... at least not according to holiday tradition in Austria and Germany, where the good saint is accompanied on his rounds to bring gifts to good children by Krampus – a not-so-nice, demon-like creature who warns the naughty ones; you’ll see him represented along with St. Nicholas on your travels to Christmas Markets throughout the region.
Nürnberg On Nürnberg’s main market square opposite the Church of Our Lady sits Germany’s most famous Christmas Market, with its golden-haired Christmas Angel and charming “Plum People,” unique to Bavaria and made from dried plums and other fruits. By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, this “Little Town from Wood and Cloth” will have welcomed two million visitors – including you – delighting them with its authentic ornaments, Christmas candles, cookies, tasty fruit loaves, tangy gingerbread, handmade toys and glühwein. Your day in Nürnberg also includes a choice of sightseeing tours.
