trading update Ian Hetherington, director general of the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) summarises market activity for non-ferrous metal.
THE END of 2011 saw relatively low volumes and low activity in the non-ferrous market. The beginning of 2012, however, saw much higher London Metal Exchange (LME) levels and more material entering the market along with higher demand. China in particular was relatively active before withdrawing slightly
over the Chinese New Year period. The uncertainties surrounding the Euro zone and concerns over
Greek debt bailout conditions have not gone away, but there are positive signs of recovery which have brightened the European economic outlook. Demand for copper scrap is good, surpassing US$ 8000 per tonne on
the LME, and discounts are on the rise again. Demand from European and Middle and Far Eastern aluminium consumers is good, but prices have remained relatively unchanged. Margins have been getting smaller and the trend in Europe is to produce more specialised alloys to achieve better margins. Some have considered reducing production to manage the increasing cost of aluminium scrap. Reasonably good orders from Asia have fuelled high demand for secondary aluminium. European works have also seen good orders based on demand from
the automobile industry. Following months of slow-moving trade for stainless, LME levels
have improved with slightly increased demand. Those who have been holding onto stocks are now selling. There is good demand for mixed brass scrap into Europe but not
much material around. Zinc and lead have also gained more interest and have managed to
shift some old stock but with bigger discounts than last year. Overall, the focus on quality continues for all materials and high
demand from countries in the Far East is keeping materials flowing out of Europe.
Organising the seemingly un-organisable...
EWRG know how diffi cult it really is to organise your electrical
waste sometimes from multiple locations through different service providers. With a busy
schedule to keep it may at times seem almost impossible.
That is why we collect from anywhere in the UK and with all
of the different services we offer. So for all of your needs on WEEE, Lamps and Batteries we can provide one collection and one
audit trail and then we can help you get back to doing what you do best.
