MICHAEL NEUMANN
Based in Augsburg, Germany, where he is the editor-in-chief of KANU magazine, Neumann was just a two-hour autobahn drive away from the 2011 World Freestyle Championships in Plattling. Capturing high action and revealing lifestyle images at the event (“What it Takes to Win,” page 29) was second nature to Neumann, who started taking pictures 20 years ago to finance paddling trips around the world.
BENNETT BARTHELEMY
Barthelemy’s writing and photo work engages individuals that have made a lifestyle out of living on the edge. He has interviewed climbing legends Rick Ridgeway, Tom Frost, Lynn Hill, Steph Davis and the late John Bachar. His work has appeared in Backpacker, Climbing Magazine, Rock and Ice, and Outside. He ran shuttle once for Rush Sturges. While writing the profile of Todd and Brendan Wells (page 19) he was not at- tacked by llamas.
KELSEY THOMPSON
Hailing from Truro, Nova Scotia, Thompson has represented the East Coast as a member of the Canadian Freestyle Kayak Team since 2004, and as the 2010 Canadian National Freestyle Champion. He’s equally adept at downriver freestyle, teaching the wave wheel on page 20. When he’s not making moves on the river, you’ll find him making turns on his mountain bike or backcountry skis and making adventure documentaries.
VIRGINIA MARSHALL
Although Rapid senior editor Marshall has spent some time on the cap- tain’s tube of a turkey boat and recently immersed herself in a rigorous survey of rafting dialect (“The Rafter’s Lexicon,” page 17), she admits, “I usually volunteer to be bow meat—I prefer the view from the front tube.”
DAN CALDWELL
A former free-spirited kayak bum, Caldwell recently pledged his full alle- giance to the Rapid tribe and is settling in as the land baron of White- water Township. When he’s not filming Rapid Media TV digital extras or fielding Facebook queries, he’s throwing demo boats off drops (Kayak Insider, page 24).
