Experience and rigorous research into which vessels are most in demand form the foundation of Nam Cheong’s strategy of built-to-stock vessels, one which allows it to respond quickly to any growth in demand for offshore supply vessels (OSVs) writes Nicola Stuart.

he sale of a 300-person accommodation work barge (AWB) in December of last year


also brought with it the addition of a new customer to Nam Cheong’s already strong portfolio. Operator Saujana Marine, a subsidiary of CNN Capital, will deploy the vessel to support top side maintenance, hook up and commissioning of an existing oil platform in the Malay basin engaged in shallow water activities. Te oil platform is one of many operated by Petronas. Te Malaysian shipyard Nam Cheong says


that as activities for top side maintenance, hook up and commissioning of oil platforms and marginal fields increase, it is seeing a stronger demand for AWBs in the region. Nam Cheong plans to build more vessels in the series, with the latest AWB already being the fiſth, if anticipated demand continues. Leong Seng Keat, executive director


of Nam Cheong, says: “Te AWB which we recently sold is good evidence [of the demand],” adding: “The country’s national oil company, Petronas, in June accelerated their capex over the next five years to RM300 billion [US$74 billion] and is expected to start increasing job opportunities for support vessels in 2012. Nam Cheong is in a strategic spot to capture opportunities in the oil and gas sector in Malaysia as it has about 10 vessels in 2012 for sale – amongst them anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels needed for shallow water exploration. We also have the advantage of having close ties with Petronas-licensed companies and being able to benefit from implicit cabotage regulations that favour Malaysian companies and the rising oil and gas activities in Malaysia. Globally, we benefit from the high oil prices in general.” Te 100m loa AWB has been specifically

a naval architect or ship design house – in this case, Wärtsilä Ship Design – to undertake the actual conceptualisation and design of its vessels. Te shipbuilder says that it typically chooses to build its vessels from standard proven designs, with widely accepted specifications that are capable of meeting the requirements of Nam Cheong’s customers. However, Leong points out that during construction the shipbuilder also has the flexibility to carry out multiple modifications. This flexibility enables the company to provide its customers with customised, reliable and high quality vessels. Leong explains: “Our team is constantly


working with renowned ship design firms to tap into their expertise in the design of sophisticated OSVs. Tese vessels are of high specifications and are classed as clean class / clean design, being more environmentally friendly than older designs. For example, we have entered into an arrangement with Rolls-Royce


Marine for the use of their proprietary ship designs to build eight such platform supply vessels (PSVs) which are of clean
