Long Haul Paddlers
Many epic journeys have been covered in the pages ofAdventure Kayak, most recent- ly Tim Taylor’s attempted New Zealand circumnavigation (Summer/Fall 2011,
www.adventurekayakmag.com/0031). But it isn’t just media darlings who make in- credible trips—readers had some remark- able responses to our Facebook question: What’s the longest paddle you’ve done? Denis Dwyer traveled “1,250 miles from San Juan Island, Washington, to Skag- way, Alaska.” Perry Solmonson circum- navigated Prince William Sound in 1987, “350 miles in 10 days paddling my Arluk III.” And Casle Portner reported a pre- cisely calculated paddle on the Willamette River, “15 hours and 59.59 miles.” Glenn Charles takes the prize for longest trip, “3,300 miles—the North American Atlan- tic coast.” Yup, the whole coast.
Events
The Adventure Kayak crew is kicking off another year of traveling to paddling shows and symposiums. We get started Febru- ary 9 with the world premiere of the Reel Paddling Film Festival 2012 World Tour (
www.reelpaddlingfilmfestival.com) in downtown Toronto. Also shaking up the kayaking scene this month are the drysuits recommended Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium under the bridge in San Fran- cisco (February 17–19,
www.ggsks.com) and the decidedly balmier Florida Gulf Coast International Sea Kayak Sympo- sium in St. Petersburg (February 24–26,
www.sweetwaterkayaks.com). In March, we head to Canoecopia in
Madison, Wisconsin (March 9–11, www.
canoecopia.com) to hang with the who’s who of the paddling world. Then it’s a win- ter tires-equipped interstate beeline for the Atlantic coast and Paddlesport 2012 in Somerset, New Jersey (March 23–25, www.
jerseypaddler.com/paddlesport-2012).
If
you’re on the West Coast in March and are intrigued by short boat surfing, check out the high-flying action at the 26th Annual Santa Cruz PaddleFest in Santa Cruz, California (March 16–18,
www.asudoit. com/paddle_fest/
index.html). Lovely Charleston, South Carolina,
hosts the East Coast Canoe & Kayak Festival April 20–22 (
