Here’s how a grant from FTCT helped brother and sister, Sarah and Ben...
Sarah, 17yrs and Ben, 15yrs, suffer from a rare eye condition, called Aniridia, which means they were born with no iris. They inherited the condition from their mother and as a result have been registered blind since they were 3 months old. When the time came for the children to start school, the only option available to them was a place in the local primary school, on the understanding that the children would receive the right level of support for their needs.
In reality this did not happen and even the most basic learning aids such as large print books were either broken or unavailable. Specialist classroom assistants were often absent for long periods of time. While their parents endeavoured to get the support they had been promised, Sarah and Ben fell further and further behind. Something had to change, but with no state schools in the area able to support their needs and household budgets tight, the children’s chances of receiving a normal education were limited.

At that time, their mum, Emma, who is also registered blind, was working as a cutter at a local workshop for the blind, making napkins and tablecloths for catering companies. It was through her job that Emma was able to apply for a grant from FTCT, enabling Sarah and Ben to be sent to a small specialist school close to where they live where they would receive the individual attention they need.
Today the school day for Sarah and Ben, couldn’t be more different. Not only do they have their own specialist textbooks, printed in large scale for every subject they take, but they also receive specialist one-to-one tutoring, to make sure they never fall behind again.
