The Chelsea Academy in west London sits on a compact site in the shadow of a redundant power station

layout over three identifiable clusters, with the sports hall and activity studio located underground. Up on the roof are astroturfed games areas. The three main clusters rise from two

storeys at the northern end, up to four storeys opposite the power station. These rectangular clusters have day-lit atria at their centre and are organised around courtyards that link the different buildings. So, despite the restrictions of the site, classrooms are light and bright and the views are attractive. ‘The client had strong views on a calm,

inspirational environment where daylight featured heavily,’ says Saud Muhsinovic, project director with Mott MacDonald Fulcrum. ‘We’ve also had to address the three key aspects of environmental performance in schools – namely, ventilation, overheating and acoustics – on a very busy urban site. It was a challenge.’
