the competitor pool entered in the Olympic slot qualification competition. The official start list actually has two columns dis- played, specifying the competitors as entered in the Worlds only, or in both competitions. As the Worlds competition progresses, two
separate sets of scores are maintained based on placement of the lifters per category. So for exam- ple if the first place winner in the Worlds competi- tion is not a designated point scorer for Olympic qualification, but the Worlds second place winner is, then the Worlds second place winner moves up and becomes in effect the first place “winner” in the Olympic slot qualification competition, thereby earning 28 points for his or her National Federation in terms of Olympic slot qualification. Unfortunately, as the Worlds competition progresses, the cu-

With a 2010/2011 combined point score total of 103 points, the
mulative scoring for Olympic slot qualification competition is not published as are the Worlds results, requiring once or twice daily separate hand scoring by individual teams’ officials, a very labori- ous and time consuming procedure to complete session by ses- sion, in order for the position of a team in slot qualification ranking to be understood at any point in the process. However, without doing so, a team will not know specifically where it stands, or how to adjust its competition strategy as the lifting progresses in or- der to maximize its slot qualification point scoring. In the case of our women’s team, the primary objective was
to preserve its 21st place finish for Olympic slot qualification at the 2010 World Championships in order to secure two Olympic slots, with 21st the lowest team placement ranking for Olympic slot qualification at the world level. The USAW projection preceding the 2011 World Champion-
ships indicated that our designated point scorers were positioned to earn 53 points, the same total as in 2010, based on their Worlds

US women finished in 19th place with 5 points to spare, as the 20th and 21st place teams, Dominica and Armenia, tied as 98 points, a very worthy result, considering that a total of 63 Nation- al Federations had entered competitors in the women’s Olympic slot qualification competition. Only 21 teams, a third of the total 63 entered, earned Olympic
slots. The secondary objective was increasing our women’s Olympic
slot qualification from two to three. Ecuador finished in 16th place with a combined total of 119 points, the lowest team placement level for qualification of three women’s Olympic slots. While the USAW outer limit projection for the designated point scorers had been 69 points, sufficient to tie Canada at 15th place on a com- bined 2010/2011 point scoring basis with 122, achievement of to- tals required to obtain this result had been considered possible, but of low probability, which proved to be the case.
