How to select a bra that fits...

All women lose firmness as we get older, and so do our bras. When you buy a bra, make sure it fits you in the loosest hook. That way you can tighten the bra to the second and third hooks as it ages and retain the firmness and the lift.

Ideally, your breasts should be midway between your shoulders and your elbows. Your bra should be level front to back. Most women wear their bra bands too high on their torsos and throw their measurements off.

Another frequent mistake is to increase the band size, instead of getting a deeper cup. The bra needs to be snug in the back to lift the bust. The bra band is like a bridge, so if it is properly planted, snug and lower at the base, it can lift better.

Remember to bend deeply at the waist before fastening your bra. This automatically centers it and distributes the volume evenly. The straps should neither fall down nor dig into your shoulders. They ought to provide only 10% of the bra’s support; the rest comes from the band.

In order for your bra to keep its shape and support, change bras throughout the week. If you wear the same bra two days in a row, you will wear out the support elastic so that it loses its memory.

Here are some obvious clues that your bra is the wrong size:

• If your breast spills over the cup, it is time to go up a cup size.

• If your cups dimple, it is time to go down a cup size.

• If you have a roll of fat showing in back, you probably think your bra is too tight but, in fact, your bra is too large. Wearing the bra lower on your back with a smaller band size will eliminate the back fat.

• If your straps fall down, your bra band is riding up and you probably need to go down a band size.

Remember, for a better fit, try going down a band size and up a cup size.

Note: Medicare reimburses for 4-6 bras annually.
