Following delivery to the US Navy’s Experimen-

tal Diving Unit (NEDU) in Panama City, Florida, the SAT FADS successfully completed an extended, manned, pier-side test to its design depth of 1000ſt (305m), using the bell handling system. SAT FADS is expected to undergo certification trials off the coast of California in the summer of 2012.

45 destroyers and Astute class submarines. In May of 2009 Pipex was awarded a contract to supply GRE pipe for the QE class carriers. Pipex has fabricated more than over 2000 pipe

spools for the QE class carriers using approximately 5km of glass reinforced epoxy (GRE) pipe and in excess of 7000 fittings. Te company says designers are increasingly recognising the many advantages that GRE holds over traditional steel options when subjected to the harsh and demanding environments. GRE has extremely high corrosion-resistance

properties and meets the stringent smoke, fire and shock requirements necessary for Royal Naval applications. It is lightweight – approximately one third the weight of comparable steel alternatives. Tese benefits mean that GRE pipe has an extended design life, provides significant through-life cost savings, has minimal maintenance requirements and is cost-effective and safe to install. challenge on the QE class project with regard to the bulkhead pipe penetration. Conventional steel flanged penetrations were no longer viable and the Pipex’s designers were able to supply a GRE equiva- lent that maintained the watertight integrity and fire resistance required. For the first time on such a substantial scale,

commissioned Following successful sea trials and outfitting details, the SIGMA type frigate Tarik ben Ziyad has been delivered to the Royal Moroccan Navy by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Vlissingen, Te Netherlands. Te frigate was delivered in time and according to

schedule and is the first of three ordered by the Royal Moroccan Navy. Construction of the remaining vessels is well underway. Tarik ben Ziyad will begin her maiden voyage to Morocco in September 2012.

Carriers Key role for Pipex

on QE class carriers UK-based Pipex Ltd is playing a key role in the construction of the UK Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth (QE) class aircraſt carriers. Te company, which was established in 1975 by Chairman Alan Smith, is privately owned and family run. Originally, its core business was thermoplastic pipe fabrication. Over the years it has gained a high level of expertise working on military projects such as the Royal Navy’s Type

pultruded phenolic grating for the vessels were also designed, supplied and fabricated by Pipex, including 1400m2 for the flight-deck walkways and 200m2 for the forward and aſt island walkways. Phenolic grating supplied by Pipex provides structural fire integrity together with reduced smoke density and smoke toxicity when exposed to fire. It has many advantages over its comparable steel equivalent including high strength and durability, high corrosion resistance, low weight, low conductivity, minimal maintenance and ease of installation. It is also ‘anti-slip.’ WT
