For centuries, writers, poets, and musicians have sung the praises of love—the need for it, the importance of it, the meaning of it. But what is love? A feeling or an emotion—something you can fall into and then out of just as easily. To accurately define love, it is best to examine the source. For when you do so, you will find that true love is something entirely different. You will find that God is love (I John 4:8).
According to I John 4:9, “God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.” Verse 10 continues by saying, “This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.”
Do you think you might be good enough to deserve God’s love? Or perhaps you wonder how God could love you at all? God’s love is not based on what you can do for Him, but on what He has done for you.
According to Romans 3:23 we have all sinned— no one is good enough for God. And since we are all sinners, there must be a repercussion for our sin. The Bible says in Romans 6:23 that “the wages of sin is death.” The word death often refers to separation. However, God desires to have a relationship with YOU. Romans 5:8 says, “But God showed his great love for us by
sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Because of His love for you, Christ chose to die for you, just as you are. His death on the cross was the perfect, sinless sacrifice to pay the penalty for your sins. And His resurrection proves that He has the power over death.
God has given you His love, true love, but He has also given you a choice to accept it or reject it. If you would like to end your search for true love and experience a personal relationship with God, simply tell Him that. You may use this sample prayer as a guide:
Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that there is nothing I can do to earn my way into Heaven. I believe that Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection paid the penalty for my sins. I now accept Your gift of salvation from sin and receive You as my Savior. Thank You for forgiving my sins and saving me by Your grace. Help me to follow You from this day forward. In Jesus’ name I ask these things, Amen.
