races throughout the season, balancing time with family and friends, balancing work life with training. What we often don’t mention, though, is finding emotional balance. This is an essential piece to the training and racing process. What is balanced for one person may be wildly imbalanced for another person. knowing how to get back in balance emotionally can help you bring your athlete’s performance to the next level, and make them a happier athlete. So, how do we find emotional balance?

RECOGNIZE Some people


know when they are


emotionally out of whack. For others, however, they just seem to feel a little “off.” They may notice that they have felt more down lately than normal. Take an emotional inventory of the last few weeks. Have you felt pretty even-keel recently? Or have you felt depressed, angry or anxious? If you or your athletes can say that the majority of the time, you have felt pretty content and happy, then move on. Nothing to read here. However, if you think back and realize that you haven’t been as content with your life and your mental state as you would like to be, keep reading.


LOSING SIGHT most often, when we are out of balance, it is because we don’t do enough for ourselves. We often lose sight of what really matters. you will never look back on your life and say “I wish I spent more time at work, away from my friends and family.” There are many different elements of our lives competing for time every day: our job(s), our significant others, our children, our friends, our own training, keeping the house in order, running errands — the list can go on. Now with the holidays upon us, we are spread even thinner. Each portion of your life is just that — a portion. Letting any one aspect take over
