Wireless Video

Surveillance: A Capital Idea

By Art Gissendaner W 40 School Transportation News Magazine January 2012

While the consensus in the student transportation industry is that wireless is the future of school bus video surveillance, experts say the interest in wireless systems is increasing faster than the capital school districts need to buy them. They also caution transportation officials to be sure of their needs before shopping for a surveillance system, and to never leave home without their information technology (IT) specialist.

Wireless video surveillance can be defined as historical or real time. Histori-

cal video can be viewed only after the bus has returned to the yard and the video is downloaded. Real-time wireless video can be viewed as events occur on the bus, with a 10- to 12-second delay. Historical video is currently used by those districts that can afford it, and real time is a standard that has not been realized in the education community — for now. Mike Shepherd, fleet services manager for Sumter County (Fla.) District

Schools, located about 60 miles northwest of Orlando, says something new was needed to replace their antiquated VCR system. Te district decided to go with the historical system for surveillance and GPS tracking for the fleet of 68 buses.
