The Reverend Hoover T. Grimsby

A child prodigy, Hoover became a church organist at age 7 and performed at the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. Growing up in a parsonage, he graduated from Luther Seminary and served parishes in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Eventually, he became Senior Pastor of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Hoover could walk with kings, but he never lost the common touch. In his pastoral role, he wrote personal notes to everyone. Shirley and he were the life of many a party. An accomplished amateur photographer, Hoover brought his camera with him everywhere. Shirley and he enjoyed their daily tennis matches virtually until his death this autumn at age 91. A recounting of his honors would fill several pages of this magazine.

For 43 years, Hoover served as a Carthage Trustee. He provided leadership for the Board’s decision-making. The impact of Shirley’s and his philanthropy continues to open doors to college for needy students.

Planned and estate gifts to Carthage, such as will inclusions, charitable gift annuities and trusts, and life insurance, provide ideal opportunities to benefit you and the College. Call Dr. Jim Unglaube at 1-262-945-3024; send e-mail to junglaube@carthage.edu; or write to him at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin 53140.
