JUNIOR TOURNAMENT MEMBERSHIPS (JTMS) AVAILABLE
USCF’s Tournament Membership (TM) program, which allows players the option of joining for only one event at a greatly reduced rate, has been modified. Junior TMs for age 24 or below may be purchased from affil- iates and are now available to them for $7 online with rating report submissions. They include one issue of Chess Life or Chess Life for Kids, and $5 of this fee may be applied to a full membership within 60 days. JTMs not valid for National events. Many scholastic tournaments exist that are not USCF-rated, and the USCF is concerned that the reason is that organizers fear losing players unwilling or unable to pay entry fee plus dues. The availability of a $7 option should cause some of these events to switch to being USCF-rated, pro- moting membership. The idea behind the TMs is not to sign up a lot of them, but rather to cause more USCF-rated tournaments to be held. More details on
uschess.org.
50 Chess Life — January 2012
Rating supplementswill be updated EACH MONTH on the USCF website, and each monthly rating supplement will be used for all tournaments beginning in that month, unless otherwise announced in Chess Life. The USCF website at
www.uschess.org also frequently lists unofficial
ratings. The purpose of unofficial ratings is to inform you of your progress; however, most tour- naments do not use them for pairing or prize purposes. If youwould otherwise be unrated, organizersmay use your unoffi- cial rating at their discretion, even without advance publicity of such a policy.
