SPEED-BASED PRICING Internet users in the Middle East and Africa and Latin American regions are paying relatively high prices for their DSL connections, when prices are calculated per megabit, despite the fact that operators in those regions face stiff competition from mobile operators, according to new research from Point Topic. This is largely because average downstream speeds here are low, at 4.7 Mbps in Latin America and 5.2 Mbps in the Middle East and Africa. In all regions subscribers using fibre networks receive much greater value for money, due to the significantly higher speeds offered by FTTx technologies. In Asia, where there are a number of advanced fibre markets, prices per megabit are particularly attractive.

SIZING THE OPTIMISATION SPACE The mobile network optimisation and self-organising networks (SON) market will be worth close to $3 billion by 2015, Infonetics Research predicted in November. 2G/3G optimisation software accounts for the lion’s share of the market at present, with 78% of the world’s mobile subscribers using 2G networks. However, the SON space is about to witness rapid growth – a predicted CAGR of 84% between 2010 and 2015 – as operators push ahead with LTE network rollouts. Asia-Pacific is the world’s largest regional market for mobile network optimisation and SON.

EUROPEANS GO SOCIAL 55.1 million mobile users across Europe’s five biggest markets accessed social networking sites or blogs via their handset in September, an increase of 44% year-on- year, according to new figures from comScore. That repre- sents 23.5% of the total mobile audience in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. 46.8% of those users said they access social networking sites on a daily basis, up 67% versus September 2010. And 39 million said they accessed Facebook via a mobile device during the survey period, compared to 8.6 million for Twitter.

MEXICO’S MOBILE MEASURES The Mexican mobile market will pass the 100% penetration milestone by 2013, narrowing the gap between itself and some other highly-penetrated markets in Latin America, according to Pyramid Research. Growth will be fuelled by the availability of more affordable mobile devices, with higher access speeds and better coverage, as well as by an increase in M2M connections, the firm notes. Boosting competition in the market is top of mind for regulators; when compared to countries with similar economic and social development, Mexico’s penetration growth has been relatively weak in recent years. However, the government is undertaking various measures to level the playing field for operators, improving competition and therefore penetration.
