MEGABLAST (AND MAKOSSA)
HAVING dropped ‘Soy Como Soy’ on their own Luv Lite Recordings at the beginning of November, Vienna duo Makossa & Megablast are masters of mixing Latin looseness, afro- centric grooves and baile beats with the more strictured format of house and techno. Enlisting the likes of Tony Allen, the legendary Fela Kuti’s drummer, and Hubert Tubbs, former singer with mighty funk band Tower of Power (check their prescient ‘Only So Much Oil In The Ground’), it’s clear that respect for them is deep
following 2007’s ‘Kunuaka’ on Kruder & Dorfmeister’s G-Stone label and DJ Mag favourites include the Night Rider-esqe melody of ‘Bailalo’, featuring Cleydys Villalon, and the album’s brooding title track. Just as on ‘Soy Como Soy’ their chart takes in tempos high and low, from the wonky disco of Cottam’s onomatopoeic ‘Twang’ and Wareika’s phasing ‘1st Floor’ to DJ Sneak’s ‘Delta Trippin’, for a ride that takes you up, down, and round and round and round…
