Paper and board finishes 2011 with increase
2011 is likely to end with a correction in UK paper and board prices following a year of volatility in the markets that saw prices for some grades rise by over 50%, says Stuart Pohler of the Confederation of Paper Industries.
BASED ON data from the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) and HM Revenue & Customs, it is likely that 2011 will end with a slight increase in paper and board collected for recycling in comparison with 2010, alongside a decrease in paper and board products being consumed. This is a reflection of the general economic conditions prevailing in the
UK through 2010 and the highly effective paper recovery industry that now operates across the UK waste stream. This means the overall recycling rate is likely to see a return to 2009 levels
of around 67% following a fall to 64% in 2010. At the time of writing, it is anticipated that UK collection of used recovered
paper will come in at around 8.2 million tonnes; about 200,000 tonnes more than 2010. A fall in the recovered tonnage of mixed grades and newspapers and
magazines is likely to be offset by an increase in the collection of both high grades of paper and corrugated and Kraft, which may reflect an increase in recycling collections from commercial (offices and retail) premises across the UK.
Paper and board consumption is likely to decline by about 3% to 10.2
million tonnes. The UK continues to rely heavily on export markets for paper and board
recycling; particularly the Far East which has seen an increase of 6.1% so far in 2011. 2011 is likely to see well over 50% of used paper and board collected in
the UK being sent overseas for recycling, with 79% of exports sent to the Far Rast, including 62% to China alone. This is a modest increase in the 2010 numbers, which saw 78% of
exports sent to the Far East, including 61% to China. The marginal change from last year reflects the continuing European
demand for UK recovered paper and board throughout the first half of 2011. - CPI represents the paper chain from the recovery of used paper
through papermaking and conversion to distribution. For more details of the Confederation and for news of the industry, visit

Organising the seemingly un-organisable...
EWRG know how diffi cult it really is to organise your electrical
waste sometimes from multiple locations through different service providers. With a busy
schedule to keep it may at times seem almost impossible.
That is why we collect from anywhere in the UK and with all
of the different services we offer. So for all of your needs on WEEE, Lamps and Batteries we can provide one collection and one
audit trail and then we can help you get back to doing what you do best.
