COLOGNE & COTTON CO-FOUNDER JENNY DEEMING LOVES THE TRANQUILLITY OF WARMINGTON
I
don’t have to go far to enjoy my favourite view. I am fortunate enough to live in one of the prettiest villages in England. Nestling beneath Edge Hill escarpment on the Warwickshire/Oxfordshire border, Warmington’s honey-coloured cottages, 17th-century manor house and former rectory are clustered around a broad, sweeping green and village pond so picturesque that a watercolour painting of it once featured as a poster for the GPO (in the days when we still had a village post office!). Christmas is celebrated with carols on the green. There’s a tree with lights, everyone brings a lantern and there’s mulled wine and mince pies. I also love it here in summer, with the swallows and swifts skimming over the duck pond. I sit on the bench at sunset, admiring this perfect scene. Photographs taken over a century ago show that nothing much has changed over the years, except that the road that winds down past the pond was then no more than a cart track. It is this sense of continuity that I find especially comforting in an increasingly transient world. At the end of another frantic working day it provides the most relaxing therapy. Every time I sit out by the pond and look over the green and across the valley to Avon Dassett I know there is no place that I would rather be. Cologne & Cotton’s Christmas gifts come with a free giftwrapping service and it also stocks a range of Christmas decorations. A new shop at 1 New Bond Street Place, Bath, has just opened. HOW TO ENJOY THE VIEW Take Junction 11 from the M40, then the A422 towards Banbury. Continue on to the B4100 to Warmington.
