Dr Greg Whyte PhD, BSc (Hons) Welcome Welcome to the first edition of 2008. I In this issue w n this issue we have the first in a regular series of e the first in a regular series of Olympic articles aimed at
helping sportEX readers gear up to be part of the Olympic family in 2012. My own experience in Greece and my present job at a leading English football club lead me to adding one thing to Paula Clayton’s sage advice; learn to speak another language!
Working in Athens as one of the volunteer massage therapists I quickly had to learn a few words in the key languages but I was at a disadvantage because many of my colleagues from other parts of the world could hold meaningful conversations with the athletes. In my football team we have a German goalie, a Dutch full back, a Brazilian centre half, an Argentinean midfielder, a French winger, and Peruvian striker. They all have one thing in common; the ability to speak in a variety of tongues. All of them speak at least two languages and some of them more. One of them clocks up four languages! None of the English educated players or staff has this ability.
There will be thousands of people competing for seats at the Olympic table so if we want to stand out from the crowd we need to be able to communicate. We have three years!
