Cambridge Challenge Appreciation Ceremony
On September 22, Mayor David Maher held an appreciation ceremony for the 37 businesses and organizations who hired Cambridge youth this summer. The event was part of the Cambridge Challenge, an initiative of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce’s Community Outreach Committee. The event included a presentation of certificates and a photo with the mayor. Student employee Laura Jean also spoke about her experience at Dwyer/Partners, LLP. The Cambridge Innovation Center was presented with the Warren P. MacEachern award for outstanding employer of the year. An ad was placed in the Cambridge Chronicle recognizing the commitment that local businesses and organizations have made to Cambridge youth (see the ad below). We hope that during this upcoming year this list of companies continues to expand and will include your business. Please visit www.cambridgechallenge.org for details on how you can participate.

Young professionals need your help!
Calling all mentors! After many discussions with young professionals involved in the CCC’s Young Professionals (CYP) programming, it has become apparent that there is a huge need for mentors and advisors to help guide our young pros through their early professional years. Many young pros have expressed interest in gaining advice on everything from how to update their resume to how to ask for a raise, plus many other topics related to taking their career to the next level. They would appreciate someone who could provide an unbiased ear, guidance, input and ideas.

This is where our potential mentors and advisors will come in to play. We are looking for a group of professionals, 35 years-old and above, who are willing to give some of their time to aid our young professionals. Think about who guided you or served as an inspiration in your early working years. If you didn’t have someone of influence when you started, then that’s even more reason to lend your support.

“How much time do I need to commit?” you ask. The relationship between mentor and mentee will be determined based on both of their schedules, what the young pro needs and how much time they choose to devote to meeting, whether it is once a month in person or simply a regular e-mail exchange. “Advisors,” on the other hand, will be volunteers who are interested in providing advice and wisdom but who may not have as much time to devote. When discussing potential involvement, please be open about how much time you are willing or able to devote to your mentee/advisee so we make the right fit. Your commitment and time is a valuable resource.

We are very excited about this program and looking to launch in December 2011/early 2012. Please contact Kelly Thompson Clark at ktclark@cambridgechamber.org or Molly Cole at mcole@cambridgechamber.org if you are interested, need more info or if you would like to suggest someone you think would be a great fit.
