Energy Engines

Tropical cyclones need a lot of energy. They get their fuel from warm, moist air, which is why they form only in tropical waters. The water must be at least 26.5° Celsius (80° Fahrenheit). As a storm forms, it begins to swirl. Once its winds hit and stay at 119 kilometers (74 miles) per hour, the storm is called a tropical cyclone.

The clear area near the center is called the eye.
