The Hall of Fame Two to the top

The Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Associa- tion hosted its 23rd Annual Dinner at London’s swanky Grand Connaught Rooms last month to a packed crowd of the industry’s finest. Acknowledging the calibre of Mortgage Introducer’s service towards the industry it was no real surprise that IMLA invited MI publisher Robyn Hall and reporter Yuan Phoon to the top table amongst other industry luminaries. The evening began with opening remarks

from IMLA chairman John Heron as he remi- nisced of his halcyon student days when he met a young Michael Coogan, former director general of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, at Warwick University. Apparently Coogan was a reliable pub crawl wingman with a winning way with girls. Oh how their paths would cross again. The succinct speech paved the way for a

fine five-course dinner which included a vod- ka and lime sorbet - clearly a menu arranged by someone who knew the tastes of the intermediary sector! – and a charity raffle in aid of Crisis. Dinner fuelled guests for the evening’s enter- tainment provided by Scottish comedian and mortgage favourite Fred MacAuley and a crack- ing couple of gags about hotel porn, balding and his naive 19-year-old son excitedly informing his Dad he’s booked a holiday with friends travelling Ryanair for 68p! “You just wait for the charges, son!”

Mawdsley rides again

Congratulations to industry veteran John Mawd- sley who has again completed the Silverstone Britcar 24 hours challenge raising a stack load of cash once again for the Claire House Children’s Hospice. “At one point we were up to 16th overall how-

ever despite many challenges … fuel leak, gear- box change, wheel bearing, drive shaft….and los- ing over 3 hours in the pits we still managed to finish 32nd overall,” a chuffed Mawdsley told the HoF.

“The Saxon team did a fantastic job and the encouraging messages over the weekend really meant a lot and kept the whole team motivated.” Mawdsley was helped along by drivers Simon

Hill, Marcus Mahy and George Haynes. Donations can still be made at www.justgiving. com/John-Mawdsley24

Taking the biscuit Andrew Seymour, the former Optima (remem- ber them?) chief who personally lost over £2m in the run up to the start of the credit crunch in 2008 is keeping a wide berth from mortgages. “I’m importing biscuits

now,” he told the HoF after an impromptu encounter on London’s City Road. “I’m still in touch with some of the old crowd but glad to be out of it to be honest,” he ‘fessed up.

But back to biscuits... “I’m importing Elgorriaga, a little Spanish treat that is made from high end ingredients in a traditional method to establish a very unique cookie dough taste.”

The Elgorriaga brand is 300 years old and is the third oldest company in Spain. Now that’s taking the biscuit.

Yuan gets spanked

The Blemain Group steps onto the red carpet this month and enters The Hall of Fame for providing a day out at the spectacular Forest of Arden Golf and Country Club. Mortgage Introducer’s mighty Yuan Phoon joined brokers for a round of 18 on a course which boasted deer, ducks, pheasants and wild brokers.

Highlights included Kevin Thompson, intermediary business director at Brilliant Solutions, for nearly decapitating the mighty Yuan with an errant shot; Thompson skilfully striking a shot through a skein of geese and Thompson masterfully hitting (almost) every tree on the course.

The event preceded an evening at the Blemain

Group Awards, celebrating the short-term lending industry and raising over £3,000 for Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. “Quite frankly I was robbed – my mediocre golf just didn’t make the cut leading to a lack of golfing prizes,” a devastated Phoon told the HoF. “If only MIBI editor Sarah Davidson had agreed to caddy for me it could have been all so different. Despite this I must say the day proved to be terrific fun!”
