According to the Air Barrier Association of America, an average U.S. home has over a half mile of cracks and crevices. By sealing and insulating those gaps, homeowners can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs, says the U.S. Department of Energy.
One of the keys to below-grade insulation, besides thermal performance, is promoting water drainage away from the foundation to keep the basement free of leaks and moisture.
A joint effort between Cobblestone Homes and Dow, the InVision Zero, net-zero house in Midland, Mich., features a practically airtight building enclosure and highly insulated shell. This demonstration home, currently serving as an education center, is expected to save $2,441 annually in energy costs.
