From Our Bishop Being the missional church


hope I will be able to share with you. I spent much time in study, reflection and writing. I wanted to focus on the rite of confirmation so that as your bishop I could assist in creating a theological and pastoral framework from which that rite would be more meaningful.


From this starting point, I expanded my area of concentration to include studying the place of baptism and formation in the life of a Christian. The result of this study is a manuscript which I am now revising and proofing with the help of readers within and outside of our diocese.

Otoño, estoy de regreso de mi sabático para estar totalmente presente con la comunidad que tanto estimo. El tiempo que pasé fuera ha sido un regalo muy particular, un regalo para mí que espero poder compartir. Pasé mucho tiempo estudiando, reflexionando y escribiendo. Quería enfocarme en el rito de la confirmación para que como su obispo, los pueda asistir a crear una teología y un marco pastoral para que dicho rito pudiera ser más significativo.

estudio de lugares de bautizo y formación en la vida de un Cristiano. El resultado del estudio es un manuscrito que voy a revisar y corregir, el cual ayudará a los lectores dentro

In a very real way, the emerging Mission Plan and the developing Episcopal Church Center in Ocean Beach dovetail with my sabbatical work on baptism, formation and confirmation. When you read about our church looking beyond its walls, think about your baptism, confirmation and how you are being formed for mission. Through our partnerships with the Diocese of El Salvador, Dorcas House, and through various mission efforts benefiting work in Africa, we are being the missional church.


Baptism is the beginning of the Christian life but formation and teaching are the life-blood of the disciplined life in Christ.


The world is crying out for the hope, love and transformation that we know and are called to offer in Jesus Christ. As communities of teaching, we strengthen each other to do that mission in the world.


Finally, I want to thank the diocesan staff, the Standing Committee, Council, and Corporation for their hard work while I was on sabbatical. Thank you for making this time possible. As I enter this next season of service, please know of my deep gratitude for the privilege of being your bishop and my excitement about our shared service together.

Mientras se acerca el Otoño estoy ansioso por hacer participar a nuestro clérigo y a los líderes de las congregaciones en el cambio de parecer sobre como trabajaremos como congregaciones en la formación del trabajo de toda la vida. Bautismo es el comienzo de la vida Cristiana, pero formación y enseñanza son la sangre de vida de la disciplinada vida en Cristo. Siento que esta vez soy llamado a ser un Obispo que enseñe y luche para construir una diócesis como una comunidad de enseñanza.


En una forma muy real, el emergente Plan de Misión y de desarrollo en el Centro Episcopal en Ocean Beach encaja con mi trabajo de sabático sobre el bautismo, la formación y confirmación. Cuando lean sobre nuestra iglesia mirando más allá de sus paredes piensen sobre el bautismo, confirmación y como están siendo formados para su misión. A través de nuestra asociación con la Diócesis de El Salvador, Dorcas House, y a través de varios esfuerzos de diferentes misiones,


a beneficio del


trabajo en Africa, estamos siendo una iglesia misional.


El mundo pide esperanza, amor y transformación, sabemos que somos llamados para ofrecer en Jesús Cristo. Como comunidades de enseñanza, nos fortalecemos unos a otros para cumplir con esa misión en el mundo.


Finalmente, quiero darle las gracias al personal de la diócesis, el Comité Permanente, el Consejo Directivo, y Corporación por su arduo trabajo mientras yo estaba en mi sabático. Gracias por hacer este tiempo posible. Mientras entro a la siguiente etapa de servicio, por favor sepan de mi gran gratitud por el privilegio de ser su Obispo y mi emoción sobre el servicio que compartimos.
