8 School Transportation News Magazine September 2011 Reader Recollections from the Past 20 Years STN surveyed readers earlier this year to gauge

their thoughts on magazine since its launch 20 years ago. Troughout the next year, we’ll share more special thoughts from readers each month.

“I first met Bill Paul when I was senior VP of

marketing for AmTran Corporation. We would always get around to the subject near and dear to both of us…school bus safety. Bill shared his plans of starting his own magazine so he could have the freedom to really focus on his passion…school bus safety. I told Bill at that time that I thought he would do a great job and would be an even greater asset

to our industry. I said, at that time,

that I was so convinced of his ability to help our industry that I would commit to a full page ad for the first year. Te rest is history. Bill Paul has been and continues to be a great friend to the school bus industry. I am very proud to have know him and to have served on the first editorial board of School Transportation News. I am also honored that I still count him among my long-time friends! I congratulate him on the 20th Anniversary of STN and on his many more years of dedicated service to school transportation.” — Jerry Williams, President, CEO & Chairman

(Ret.) American Transportation Corporation “Congratulations to STN on its 20th anniversary.

Upon seeing the first issue of STN, my first thought

was, ‘Now that’s a risky venture,’ given what a niche industry school busing really is, and the fact that Bill Paul’s former publication was so firmly established. But I was excited by the newspaper format, and quickly learned that STN was adept at publishing relevant, breaking news in those days before email and social media. I still look to STN as one reliable source of information that’s important to all of us. Keep up the good work, and thanks on behalf of all student transportation professionals.” — Charlie Hood, NASDPTS Past-President Florida Department of Education

“When thinking about what to say about Bill,

there is so much to say about a man I admire for all he did to inspire me to explore my interests. I tried to think of a simple way of how to say thank you to this person who gave so much and asked for so little in return. I think this sums it up for me. Bill demonstrates praiseworthy commitment to the school bus transportation industry. He speaks with a voice of integrity and credibility and the transportation industry would not be where it is today without his never-ending influence.” — Linda Bluth, NAPT President Maryland State Department of Education

“Although I did not really become part of the

pupil transportation industry until 1995, reading STN introduced me to the scope and complexity

of the school transportation manager’s job. In 1996, when Bill Paul invited me to write for STN, I was thrilled. Bill taught me how to write for a professional publication, and he is the instigator who facilitated the first (Linda) Bluth and Burns ‘dynamic duo’ presentation. I credit him with much of the acceptance I have received from the industry and people that I love, and I continue to read STN every month as my source of information I need to know.” — Peggy A. Burns, Esq. Education Compliance Group

“Shortly after the Head Start transportation

document (45 CFR 1310) was issued (January 2001), Bill Paul simplified the regulations and presented the information to STN readers and STN EXPO attendees. Fortunately, I was one of the consultants who assisted Bill. Some of the early beneficiaries of the information have continued to increase their knowledge and understanding of the importance of compliance with the regulations and have helped to expand the understanding of the mission of Head Start and how Head Start and K-12 education and related services can interact to make school bus rides safer for all school children.” — George F. Horne, Horne Enterprises Metairie, La.
