Presented by: Taking the Long View People tend to focus on the disaster of the moment instead of taking a long-term perspective of risk.
Having a long-term perspective at all times for all phenomena is really the backbone of making well- informed risk judgments.
Roger Pielke Jr., University of Colorado
While there is a danger that people will overreact to high-profile disasters, it is matched by a danger that will people will not pay sufficient attention to disaster-prone areas that have been spared in recent years. After 2005, for example, hurricane risk garnered all of the notice and concern; today, earthquake and tornado risk are grabbing everyone’s attention.
The key to successful risk management, however, is a long-term perspective, rather than focusing on the most recent headlines.
