lotte, North Carolina. If elected, she would become the city’s first openly LGBT council member. Mayfield is challenging four-term incumbent Warren Turner for the September Democratic primary for the southwestern district of Charlotte.
Mayfield, a community or-
ganizer, would be one of only a handful of LGBT candidates to bid for city council. “Reports indicate that she raised $6,000, a considerable sum for the con- test, between April and early July. She lists stable property values, economic development, and community safety as key points of her platform,” reported the Advocate. “Charlotte deserves an expe-
rienced community leader like LaWana Mayfield—someone who won’t be afraid to speak au- thentically about what it means to be part of the LGBT commu- nity there,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Vic- tory Fund. Mayfield has worked at Red
Cross as a supervisor and has served on the board of advi- sors for the Charlotte Lesbian and Gay Fund. She previously served as an executive board member for the Human Rights Campaign and is endorsed by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund.
Letter from the Editor A Welcome to our LGBT community
It is hard to not get wrapped
up in CityFest, with the vendors, the food, the events, and the music; but what CityFest really means for Hillcrest is a celebra- tion of the neighborhood. What it means for us, however, is a celebration of community: a LGBT community that is diverse and thriving. Every piece in this issue of Gay San Diego reflects certain aspects of and issues important to our community. People from all across San
Diego will visit Hillcrest for the festival, but it is important to remember that our community extends much farther than this neighborhood. We are in South County, La Mesa, North County, Escondido, and Alpine. The LGBT community is in Los Angeles. Sacramento. Las Ve-
gas, Seattle, New York, Washington, D.C. Truly, we are international, and it is this broad spirit that is reflected in Hillcrest every day. The LGBT community cel- ebrations continue after the Hillcrest street festival, too. Gay San Diego is proud to support the South Bay Pride Art & Music Festival. In its 8th year, the one-day event is Saturday, Au- gust 20 in the beautiful Memo- rial Park in Chula Vista. diversity in the LGBT com- munity and, of course, all are welcome. North Park, too, is show- ing its com- munity pride this week. The kick-of f of the 13th annual FilmOut San Diego film festival is being hosted at the
Birch North Park Theatre. Starting on Friday, August 19 and covering two full week- ends, the opening night film “Going Down in LaLa Land” is an adaptation of Andy Zef- fer’s novel and looks to be the
perfect SoCal flick. They even grabbed the hugely anticipat- ed “Gun Hill Road,” featuring the up-and-coming trans actor Harmony Santana.
Community is changing for us, too. The stories repre- sent our community worked on by a team, edited by two people. Rick Braatz is moving on from Gay San Diego and I am moving in. As a reader, I thank Rick for his work for the paper and what Gay San Diego means to all of us: the centerpiece of our community. Rick leaves our office commu- nity but remains, thankfully, a part of the San Diego LGBT community.

PROP. 8 HEADING TO CA SUPREME COURT The California Supreme
Court has set a date of Septem- ber 6th to hear arguments on whether supporters of Proposi- tion 8 have the right to fight a federal court ruling that struck down the measure as unconsti- tutional, saying that it violated gay Californian’s civil rights. Last year, former governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger and current governor and former attorney general Jerry Brown refused to challenge the court’s ruling. The question on the right of Prop. 8 supporters to fight the ruling is pivotal to the future of the 2008 measure, which banned same-sex mar- riage, according to The Sacra- mento Bee. A Proposition 8 support
group brought an appeal of the federal court’s ruling to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Ap- peals, but the appeals court said it couldn’t reach a conclu- sion without knowing whether the group had legal standing. The appeals court asked the Supreme Court for guidance in interpreting state law.t
