Railroad Ties

Inspired by the Depression Era stroies of Hobo Quilts, Faye Burgos created Railroad Ties for Marcus Fabrics. In the 1930s hobos took to the railways in search of a better life. Their culture developed a set of signs and symbols that found their way into original quilt blocks and projects. These fabrics are reminiscent of the cultural “ties” that connected these Americans. Along with Faye Burgos’ wonder- ful “Strip It” fabrics, Railroad Ties features her new “Patch It” fabric. Where “Strip It” features 2.5” strips of different prints running parallel to the selvage, “Patch It” features continu- ous yardage of 5” squares in different patterns. It can be used as is, printed, for quick “cheater” quilt blocks, or cut and pieced creatively in various ways to make intricate-looking designs with minimal effort. A great end use is with Primitive Gatherings’ Primitive Pinwheels. This pattern comes with the 2.25” Primitive Pinwheels template. This wonderful template tool has instructions to make an easy miniature quilt. Following the instructions that come with the template, use 2-1/2” squares sewn together. Cut them apart with the template and sew the squares back together again! PRI 946, $10.99
