ALL THE BEST EQUIPMENT FOR A BETTER SWIM

XTREME HIGH CARB ENERGY BAR This baked energy bar contains vitamins B6 and D and tastes really good. Yet, 41 percent of its 378 calories come from fat so it may not be suitable for those who don’t want too much energy or too much fat. YumYum Bros do a ‘Sportz’ version of this – half the size and allegedly for children – and this smaller bar might be bet er for the athlete who just wants a tasty snack.

MULTIPOWER MULTICARBO ENERGY+FRUIT

This product is supposedly best used for when energy is needed quickly, a claim it probably lives up to, thanks to having less fi bre (which slows down absorption of calories) than any of the other bars on test. Unfortunately, this bar also seems to have very lit le natural goodness. It has a processed taste and consistency, a sticky texture, and generally fails to off er any USP of note. Disappointing.

WINNER▼ ▼ TORQ BAR

Torq is a UK company that has set out to design the best products for sports people of all levels. Its bars are suitable for snacking before, during or aſt er exercise; the packaging is eye-catching but professional, and they are the lowest in fat of all the bars tested, with only 6.7 percent of calories coming from fat. They are also a great source of nutrients, as they are infused with 13 diff erent vitamins and minerals, are vegan friendly and also contain ribose, which some research suggests supports cellular recovery aſt er endurance training. While I’m not a fan of all the fl avours in the range and the bars may be too sticky for some, I can fi nd very lit le that is worthy of any negative comment.

GET BUZZING

Perhaps the reason that these bars taste so good is the higher fat content, which could perhaps do with being reduced a lit le, or maybe it’s that they were made in a real kitchen and don’t contain any nutritional nasties at all. A new manufacturer has improved the consistency of the bars even further, and, while I would hesitate to accept the claim that it will fuel three hours of exercise, the berry fl avour is truly a bar to savour.
