The NASUWT has paid tribute to National Executive Member Alan Homes following his untimely death in July following a heart operation.
Mr Homes, who represented members in the Greater London region, joined the National Executive in 1992 and served as Chair of the Union’s Salaries, Pensions and Conditions of Service Committee from 1998.
He joined the NASUWT as a student teacher in 1961 and began teaching in 1964. He became active within the Union, becoming Branch Secretary of his Local Association before moving on to represent members at a national level.
Mr Homes played a leading role in the Union’s negotiations on pay and conditions, helping to secure historic changes that ensured that teachers were valued as skilled professionals with working conditions that freed them up to focus on teaching and learning.
He made an invaluable contribution to the NASUWT and used his background and experience as a teacher to support NASUWT members individually and collectively.
He was a champion of equal opportunities, serving as Vice- Chair of the NASUWT Equalities Committee.
Born and bred in Barnet, Mr Homes was a science teacher at Moat Mount School for 30 years before becoming science adviser for the borough.
Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, paid tribute to Mr Homes’ unflinching dedication to his work. She said: “Alan was totally dedicated to the Union and worked tirelessly on behalf of members locally and nationally. He was liked and respected by all those he met. Teachers have lost a great supporter and advocate.”
Mr Homes leaves his wife Megan, three daughters and six grandchildren.
