First Words
My first OutDoor, my first trip to Friedrichshafen, my first BBQ on Lake Constance, my first experience of slacklining and my first, and last, communal shower.
I made the decision to camp for the duration of the show, taking a pre-pitched Vaude tent in the goalmouth of SC Friedrichshafen.
The campsite couldn’t have been more hospitable and with a ready supply of beer and currywurst on tap, it made for a comfortable base.
It must be said that having to share a shower with eight other men each morning and with, more often than not, tepid water wasn’t the most fulfilling experience, but nonetheless I had a fabulous time in Germany for four days. Camping was far better than I’d expected and the weather was gorgeous and not as swelteringly hot as I understand it to have been last year.
As predicted, the show was a perfect opportunity to meet new and old faces and to feel and try out some interesting products.
Swedish firm Walkstool, for instance, were kind enough to lend me one of its folding, telescopic leg chairs to aid my camping trip, while Powertraveller, Vango and GoLite had already furnished me with equipment needed to get me to and keep me going at the show.
I also got the chance to experience first-hand, and for the first time, slacklining. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anything like it before but what those guys can do on a thin piece of nylon webbing is quite remarkable.
I’ve got a young nephew who’s an avid skateboarder and I can tell you that I scored some major cool points when I showed him the footage I’d taken of the Gibbon guys giving it their all in the competition on Saturday evening.
