General Mattis has held command at all levels in the Marine Corps, including commanding an infantry battalion in 1st Marine Division in Operation Desert Storm to seize Kuwait. As a Brigadier General, he commanded a Brigade size Task Force in December 2001 to seize Kandahar, Afghanistan where the Taliban lived, driving the Taliban out of Afghanistan. As a Major General, he commanded the 1st Marine Division, leading his Division in April 2003 to seize Baghdad, and in April 2004 for the 1st battle of Fallujah. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and then the I Marine Expeditionary Force as the commander of US Marine Forces Central Com- mand in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a 4-star General, he served as both NA- TO’s Supreme Allied Commander Transformation from 2007to 2009 and as commander, US Joint Forces Command from 2007 to 2010. He was then selected in the summer of 2010 to command the US Central Command. Former Secretary of State George P. Shultz will introduce General Mattis to speak.
