Your pension show on the road

NUT Cymru’s Pensions Roadshow toured Wales in March. Many members came along and raised concerns about paying extra contributions, as proposed by the Westminster Government, which will see them paying more, getting less, and working longer.

Deputy General Secretary Kevin Courtney was at the roadshows in Cwmbran and Llandrindod Wells. He urged members to use the NUT website www.nut.org.uk/pensions to calculate how much they stand to lose.

Delegates at NUT annual conference in Harrogate at Easter voted overwhelmingly to ballot for strike action against the proposed changes, with the first date of action to be during the summer term.

The youth of today

The largest youth festival in Europe was held this year at the old tinplate works near Llangyfelach, in Swansea.

NUT Cymru had a prominent presence, with our information stand running all week. We were particularly pleased to be joined by children from Ysgol San Tomos, after lay officer Glyn Tiltman arranged for his pupils’ artwork to be displayed.

NUT Cymru secretary David Evans said: “This year’s Urdd Eisteddfod offered us the opportunity to mix with members, pupils and their families as well as representatives of other organisations.

“Every year we enjoy this opportunity to discuss educational issues with NUT members, school governors, parents and young people.”

NUT Wales goes online

Discussions are under way to develop a Welsh language section of the NUT website. It is hoped that the first materials will be launched later this summer.
