THE SYSTEM


Structured cabling provides the infrastructure platform that enables computers to communicate, without it business applications such as web access, email and corporate databases could not exist. Much like the electrical cables in a home, structured cabling involves wires that run inside the walls, ceilings or inside trunking and are connected to a socket, except instead of carrying mains electricity they carry the data between computer systems.


The Structured Cabling System is part of the building fabric which holds the entire IT & Telecoms communication network together. The most common application is the interconnection of desk-top computers with central servers, closely followed by the buildings telephony.


The longevity of structured cabling systems means they outlive most other networking components and yet represent only a small proportion of the total network investment. However, network downtime, in many cases, is the result of inferior or out-dated cabling systems and that this downtime can be eliminated through the use of standard-compliant structured cabling systems.


Once installed the structured cabling system, even more than the network it supports, has a tendency to become an invisible utility that is often taken for granted. Assuming that the existing cabling infrastructure can support every additional application needed without insuring available bandwidth can lead to performance failures and inefficient cable administration and management that has the potential to cause support issues should they not be correctly addressed.


The Need for Structured Cabling


With the ability to support not only voice and data, but video and building management systems, structured cabling removes the need for multiple proprietary cabling systems. As organisations become increasingly dependent on digital technology to deliver their services, structured cabling is increasingly being used to support CCTV, security, emergency and paging systems, Voice over IP (VoIP) and business video technologies.
